Baseball Update

The Woodward Academy baseball team has been playing all summer to good crowds in their first varsity season.  Now that we enter into the July 4th weekend, Iowa high school baseball is coming closer to ending we thought it would be a good idea to give you some information on how the season is progressing.  We will recap the season more fully in the next edition of the Knightly Knews (printing later this summer).  In the mean time, here are some pictures and notable stats.

5K Open House 2012

The annual WA Open House is one of the largest on campus events of the year and is traditionally accompanied with a 5K run.  For those of you who consider yourself runners, this is no ordinary 5K run.  It begins perfectly normal, but quickly turns into an endurance test by requiring the participants to run through trails, about 100 yards in a creek, and this year up the Iron Man twice.

What is the Iron Man?  Read more after the jump and to see additional images from the run.

Phase Five House Opens

The Phase Five House opened this week after months of planning and preparation.  Currently, four students are living at the house that is supervised by WA staff.  The house serves as a fifth phase in our program and is being utilized to help bridge the gap between residential treatment and the next stage in a student's life.

To catch everyone up on what the Phase Five House is and to see some images inside, read more after the jump.

A Firetruck Exhibit

In a way to expose students to new vocational job opportunities, WA staff member and local fire fighter volunteer Ben Kautza helped set up a fire truck exhibit this past Wednesday.  The purpose was to help educate students about a career in fire fighting.  Two small trucks were brought on campus and the different functions of each truck were explained.

Students were exposed to information on how to pursue a career in the field and some fire fighting techniques.  These smaller trucks are very common in the southern states and are often used in fighting smaller prairie fires.  In fact, the green truck spends 9 months of the year in Texas.  With the dry weather across the U.S. this year, fire fighting has become increasingly important and is a job always in need.
