Lifetime Executive Knight

Every month, Woodward Academy holds an assembly where the entire student body gathers and awards are handed out to the respective dorms who earned them.  Those awards include the Golden Dustpan (cleanest dorm), Silver Apple (best GPA), Community Service, and the Knight's Achievement Award (best Knights Club on campus).  In addition to these things, the Student and Staff of the Month are announced along with an activity that pits dorms against each other in a friendly competition.  Dorms rotate organizing the assembly, with the Phase 5 House being in charge this past Friday.  One additional award was announced during that assembly that came as a complete surprise to the student MC in charge... the first member of Woodward Academy's Lifetime Executive Knight Club.

Conservation Class Takes to the Wild

On Tuesday, Woodward Academy's summer Conservation class went on a field trip to the Don Williams Park where they experienced some of the great Iowa outdoors.  Based on concepts from class, this trip was an opportunity to spend some time and learn what conservation really means from professionals in the field.

For the past few months, the class discussed topics related to conservation with one of the most important being the conservation continuum.  This concept analyzes the fine line between poaching and conserving and applies primarily to game animals such as various birds and deer, but also applies to a number of insects.

On the trip, park tour guides informed the students of the lake's recent projects that included the removal of silk and mud build up at the entrance, and the growth of an osprey nest.  Students were allowed to spend some time fishing and canoeing at the lake.

Fall Sports Begin

This week marks the beginning of high school fall sports across the state of Iowa.  For boys, football and cross country are now in full swing, including at Woodward Academy with two-a-day practices this week.  Two of our six varsity sports take place in the fall and we're in the midst of the transition period where summer is sadly ending and football friday nights begin.  Much more will be talked about both cross country and football here on the blog including each teams sports poster and schedule.  If you're able, find some time to attend a football game or cheer the cross country team on a course near you.
